Our Mission

Our mission is to provide safety and support to victims of domestic violence and their children. We encourage healing and empowerment in survivors of all types of domestic abuse including physical, verbal, mental, and emotional abuse. We also strive to improve our community’s understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence so that together we can break the cycle.

In addition to providing direct services to victims, Women Are Safe, Inc. works to prevent violence against women through community education and outreach.

Individuals between the ages of 25-34 are at a higher risk of domestic abuse.

Juveniles (under the age of 18) account for 9.8% of all domestic violence victims.

Tennessee is ranked #5 for domestic violence, with one of the highest rates of women killed by men each year.

On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the US.

In 2023, there were 82 murders in Tennessee related to Domestic Violence.

Of those victims killed by an intimate partner, 72% were female.

About Us

We provided 2541 safe bednights to victims in 2023.

Women Are Safe, Inc. began in 1987 as a volunteer effort to provide shelter and safety to victims of domestic violence in Hickman County, Tennessee. Today, we have a volunteer Board of Directors, an Executive Director, and three advocates dedicated to our mission of serving the immediate needs of domestic violence victims in five rural Tennessee counties.

Over half of our shelter occupants are children.

Each year we serve hundreds of victims through our core services: a 24-hour confidential crisis line; safe, temporary shelter; court advocacy; transportation; education about the dynamics of domestic violence; support groups; referrals to community resources; and advocacy.
