WAS Staff, Volunteers, and Board of Directors

There's a safe place to go and people who care.

The Executive Director assists the members of the organization to translate the visions and goals of the agency into manageable activities, and coordinates the management of the physical, financial, and human resources of WAS. She supervises all activities at WAS, does grant writing, budgets, supervises monthly expenditures/reimbursements, provides reports to the Board, collaborates with community resources, supervises community education presentations, and provides all statistical data for grants. The Executive Director provides direct counseling to clients in shelter, supervises all counseling, and manages and assists with all direct services.

The Shelter Coordinator oversees the daily activities of the shelter and the necessary administrative duties that are directly related to the shelter. Her duties include orienting new residents to the shelter facility, supervising light housekeeping by residents, documenting case files, and coordinating referrals, advocacy and transportation for clients. Additionally she secures necessary shelter supplies and shelter maintenance/repairs, and does light bookkeeping. She helps victims file compensation forms. She maintains a record of services and keeps the director informed of the needs of battered women.

The Program Assistant answers the business phone and office door, handles correspondence, assists with securing and documenting donations, and assists with the semi annual program newsletter. She copies, files, faxes, as well as organizes community events and performs other duties as necessary. She is the backbone of our administrative team.

The Youth Program Coordinator oversees all children's activities, assesses the needs of children in shelter and helps access services to meet these needs. She facilitates children's support groups in conjunction with victims' groups. She facilitates the Teen Dating Violence Prevention Program and the Boys Against Violence curriculum in all school systems in our service area. She also participates in the Hickman County Adopt-A-Class program and serves on the steering committee for the East Hickman County Family Resource Center.

The WAS Direct Service Outreach Team consists of a Court Advocate, Dickson County Outreach Coordinator, and Humphreys County Outreach Coordinator who provide direct services to non-residential clients, those clients not currently in our shelter. Their responsibilities include court advocacy services, support group, individual counseling and community education. These advocates attend court in each county served by WAS to provide information and support to victims who have filed for Orders of Protection and/or warrants for assault by their partners. They advocate on behalf of the victim with the D.A., law enforcement, legal services, etc. and help victims file compensation forms. Our Outreach Team also assists with community education and speaking engagements in each county. They network with other community agencies to build collaborative relationships and promote a coordinated, holistic response to the needs of the victims we serve.

The Community Outreach Coordinator manages Shop ‘til It Stops, our thrifty boutique on the square in Centerville. Proceeds from the shop are used to provide financial assistance to clients served by WAS. In addition to her many responsibilities as shop manager, the Community Outreach Coordinator assists clients with direct services and provides prevention education to the community.

Volunteers are an integral part of our program. Trained volunteers staff the 24-hour hotline. They pick up and deliver donations, assist in sorting and documenting donations and maintain donation storage and distribution. Volunteers assist in keeping the shelter and office neat and in good repair, and foster the pets of families who enter shelter. Volunteers assist with child care for infants during support groups and help facilitate the children’s support groups. Volunteers assist in fund raising and often help families in locating resources such as housing, employment and emergency financial assistance that allow them to remain independent. Volunteers also assist with community education, court advocacy, translation and outreach to minority, immigrant and the LEP community. Volunteers are overseen by our Volunteer Coordinator who recruits new volunteers, facilitates volunteer training, maintains volunteer records and engages in volunteer appreciation activities through out the year.

Board of Directors is morally, fiscally and legally responsible for the organization. Members pledge themselves to carry out the mission of ending violence in the lives of women and changing societal attitudes and institutions which condone and promote that violence. The Board operates by using consensus decision making. It is the duty of the board to know what the WAS budget is, to be active in planning the budget and planning the fundraising to meet the budget. Board members are responsible for knowing and approving all policies and programs. The Board receives financial reports and direct information from paid staff regarding all WAS practices and oversees the activities of the Executive Director.
