The guest
speaker at this year’s dinner will be author and domestic violence survivor Lexi Lane. Here is a brief biography of this amazing woman, in her own words....
“The room around me fades to black as Robert removes his hands from my throat. The sound of my pulse is fading. It's almost as if my body wants to die; it is almost as if my body instinctively knows that the suffering of death could be much better than this. I want to get up, but I can't…. The oxygen depravation has rendered me weak. Blackness engulfs me…”
– Excerpt from “Monster In My Bed” A Memoir by Lexi Lane.
Hello, I am Lexi Lane. For nearly four years, my life was daily drizzled with domestic violence.
Before I found myself practically incarcerated by fear and abuse by a man eighteen years my senior, I had a most promising life. I was a farm raised, attractive, outgoing, goal oriented, energetic, and successful young woman. I had a happy, normal childhood with all my needs met by two loving, married parents. I had an extremely high self-esteem. As a beauty queen, a pageant enthusiast, a high fashion photography print ad model, and college honors graduate, I was far from the typical assumptions people have about domestic violence victims.
Life before Robert was a fun filled daily adventure. After Robert, life was more than an adrenaline rush. It was a daily struggle to avoid the pounding of furious fists against my flesh. It was a daily struggle to stay alive.
Because of the services of Women Are Safe, my children and I have a new life and a happy ending to our tragic story. Now, I serve as a domestic violence advocate and educator, gladly sharing my story of entrapment and survival.
I am also a member of the National Domestic Violence Hotline’s 'Million Voices Campaign to End Domestic Violence in America', a program in which domestic violence survivors are encouraged to share their stories as an educational service to America.
