A Dinner To Remember

Peggy

On October 22, 2009 Women Are Safe, Inc held its eighth annual Dinner to Remember awards banquet and silent auction at Caesar’s La Dolce Villa in Bon Aqua. During this event the board and staff of Women Are Safe, Inc. bring together supporters and community leaders in order to recognize the efforts put forth in our community to combat domestic violence. It is also a time to remember the stories of victims and survivors of abuse.

The guest speaker at this year’s dinner was Lexi Lane, an author and survivor of domestic violence (and a former WAS client). Lexi’s talk was moving and inspiring, and her courage in escaping the violence and rebuilding her life drew tremendous appreciation from the audience. Thank you, Lexi, for sharing your experience and for allowing us to be part of your life.

The Judy Kisiel Memorial Volunteer of the Year award was created in 2000 to recognize a volunteer, who, in the past year has proven themselves as outstanding in dependability, attitude, motivation and effectiveness. We are blessed with many outstanding volunteers and each year it is an honor to recognize one of them. This year’s award was presented to Peggy Sullivan by her daughter.

Susan

The Professional Who Cares award emerged when the staff of Women Are Safe wanted to recognize someone for their outstanding service to victims, but who was not a volunteer of the program. We realized there are professionals who, through their work, have a huge impact on victims of domestic violence. So, since 2005, we have been honored to recognize a professional who:

  • Displays a thorough knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence
  • Has displayed a consistent pattern of collaborating with WAS
  • Uses their position to educate others and advocate for victims
  • Makes themselves available to clients outside of standard office hours
  • Volunteers their time to assist WAS in their efforts to help victims
This year’s Professional Who Cares Award went to Susan Goodman, director of the United Way of Humphreys County. Susan has long supported the efforts of Women Are Safe, and has given of her time, money, and spirit to help keep our clients safe.
